Between May and November each year, more than 30,000 humpback whales pass through Port Stephens waters during their annual migration between Antarctic feeding grounds and tropical breeding areas off Queensland.
The continental shelf drops away just four kilometres offshore from Nelson Bay, creating nutrient-rich upwellings that draw krill, baitfish, and the cetaceans that feed on them. By the 1960s, commercial whaling had reduced the east Australian humpback population to fewer than 200 individuals.
